Gracie Barra Chorley and Gracie Barra Horwich have world class instructors certified through the Gracie Barra’s Instructor Certification Programme to deliver the highest standard of instruction to students of all ages and abilities.

Matthew Callaghan

Professor
Chorley and Horwich

Professor Matthew is the founder of Gracie Barra Chorley, after teaching for many years at Gracie Barra Preston he made the decision to open his own school on Friday Street in Chorley.

 

Matthew started his training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Gracie Barra Preston under Professor Lucio ‘Lagarto’ Rodrigues and is proud to be the first person to receive all his belts from his Professor right up to his current 3rd degree black belt.

 

He has been an active competitor for many years and has 3 British titles as well as success in many international competitions including European gi and no gi.

 

Matthew’s passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is as stronger than ever and wants to help spread our mission of Jiu Jitsu for everyone to help improve peoples lives for the better like it has done for him.

Matt Bell

Professor
Chorley and Horwich

Matt started training in Preston under Professor Matthew ‘Stalone’ Callaghan in late 2009, received his black belt in late 2018 and recently picked up his first degree.

 

When professor Stalone moved to Chorley Matt moved over with him to help build the academy.

Matt has competed all over the world and has won medals at the Europeans and World Championships and also closer to home having won gold at the British championships.

 

Matt is now winding down competing, concentrating on passing his skills and knowledge onto the next generation.

Larry Longton

Professor

Larry started his Brazilian jiu-jitsu journey in 2009 studying under Professor Matthew ‘Stalone’ Callaghan at Gracie Barra.  He has competed at various competitions in the UK at various belts and enjoys training at Gracie Barra gyms around the world.

 

Larry focuses on teaching the popular Early Bird classes at 6AM along with the GBK kids classes, he wants to ensure that the classes are a positive place for everyone and is an enthusiastic teacher.

Ian Ingleson

Professor

Ian has been coaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for many years starting out at Gracie Barra Preston under head Professor Matthew ‘Stalone’ Callaghan. 

 

In 2013 Ian started training at Gracie Barra Preston under Professor Matthew Callaghan and is very proud to have received his belt black belt from his professor in 2021.

 

Ian is a professional instructor with a strong focus on leadership and making Jiu Jitsu for everyone.  Ian’s love for Jiu Jitsu and commitment to share his knowledge is brought to every GB Class.

Joana Patricio Sousa

Joana fell in love with Brazilian jiu-jitsu as a teenager growing up in Portugal. 

 

As an adult, she was lucky enough to cross paths with Gracie Barra UK where she strongly identified with the idea of making the world a better place by encouraging ‘Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone’ – regardless of gender, background or ability.

 

She is passionate for learning and believes in really empowering women through the practice of Jiu-jitsu.  Her number 1 submission is the traditional RNC from the back.

Aaron Smithies

Coach

Aaron began training at Gracie Barra Preston under Professor Mathew ‘Stalone’ Callaghan in early 2015 whilst attending university.

 

After university he travelled to the world-famous Gracie Barra Northridge in California where he trained alongside multiple World champions.

 

After returning Aaron moved to Gracie Barra Chorley where he began teaching the All Levels and Fundamentals classes, he was awarded his brown belt from Professor Mathew in December 2021.

Cheryl Brassington

Cheryl started training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu at Gb Chorley in 2017. Cheryl is one of the coaches who help teach at the children’s classes and loves the family orientated approach that Gracie Barra provides. 

 

Cheryl ensures that the children’s classes are friendly, welcoming, fun and active.
